Qapture Privacy Policy

Summary: Qapture does not collect, store or share any of your data. It has no servers, no accounts, no analytics and no advertising, and it never uses the internet. Everything it records stays on your iPhone unless you choose to share it.

What Qapture does

  • Captures audio from your iPhone's microphone, or from an audio device you connect.

  • Keeps a rolling buffer of the most recent audio (30 seconds to 5 minutes, you choose) so you can save something after it happened.

  • Saves recordings as WAV files (32-bit float or 24-bit) on your iPhone.

How the microphone is used

  • Qapture asks for microphone permission once, at the end of its setup screens. You can turn it off at any time in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.

  • While Qapture is running, it listens continuously to fill the rolling buffer, including after you switch to another app or lock your iPhone. iOS shows the microphone indicator the whole time. It stops when you close Qapture.

  • The rolling buffer is kept only in your iPhone's memory. It is never written to storage, and it is erased when Qapture closes, except for any part you save.

  • Audio is saved to storage only when you tap Record, Save Last, or Save on a selection, or when you run one of Qapture's save or record actions from Siri, Shortcuts, the Action Button or Control Center. A recording started with Record also includes the audio from up to 10 seconds before you tapped it (the "pre-roll", which you can set or turn off).

  • To keep the microphone off when Qapture opens, turn off "Start buffer on launch" in Qapture's Settings. The microphone then starts when you tap Record, and keeps running until you close Qapture.

  • Microphone audio is used only to make your recordings, to show levels and the waveform, and to play the input to your headphones if you turn on Headphone monitoring. It is not analysed, transcribed or sent anywhere.

What is stored on your iPhone

  • Your recordings, in Qapture's folder. iOS encrypts them; after your iPhone restarts, they cannot be read until you unlock it for the first time.

  • A library file with each recording's name, date, length, format, file size, markers, notes, waveform preview and any warnings (gaps, clipping).

  • A recovery file while a recording is in progress, so an interrupted recording can be repaired. It is deleted when the recording is saved.

  • Your Qapture settings.

Each WAV file also contains: its name, the local date and time the recording started, the labels of any markers, the word "Qapture", and a random identifier. It contains nothing about you or your device. This information travels with the file when you share it. Notes you type are kept only in the library file, never inside the WAV file.

Where your recordings can appear

  • In the Files app (On My iPhone > Qapture), and in Finder (or iTunes on Windows) when your iPhone is connected to a computer you have trusted. Anyone using your unlocked iPhone, or a computer it trusts, can see them there.

  • In your iPhone backups. Qapture never uploads anything. But if iCloud Backup is on, or you back up your iPhone to a computer, iOS includes Qapture's recordings, library and settings in that backup, as it does for other apps. That backup is stored by Apple or on your computer, not by us.

  • On your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island while recording: the recording's name, format and elapsed time, visible without unlocking.

  • Wherever you send them. When you share a recording (AirDrop, Mail, Messages, Files and so on), iOS sends a copy where you choose. Qapture does not see or keep a record of where it went. Sharing several recordings at once makes a temporary zip file, which Qapture deletes when you close the share screen, or the next time it opens.

Deleting your data

  • Deleting a recording in Qapture removes the file and its library entry from your iPhone. Copies you have shared, and backups already made, are not affected.

  • Deleting the Qapture app removes all its recordings, notes and settings from your iPhone.

Data collection

We do not collect any data. We have no servers, and Qapture contains no code that sends data off your iPhone.

  • Personal information: not collected

  • Usage analytics: not collected

  • Advertising or tracking identifiers: not collected

  • Location: not collected

  • Crash reports: Qapture does not collect them. If you have turned on "Share With App Developers" in iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements, Apple may send us crash reports and statistics for Qapture, without information that identifies you. You can turn this off at any time in that setting.

Audio Diagnostic reports

Qapture's Settings include an Audio Diagnostic report for troubleshooting. It is created only when you open it, and it leaves your iPhone only if you copy or share it yourself (for example, by emailing it to us). It contains the date and time it was made, your iPhone model and iOS version, Qapture's audio settings, and the types and names of the audio inputs and outputs in use (Bluetooth device names are left out). It contains no audio, no recording names, and no identifiers for you or your devices. You can read the whole report before sending it.

Siri, Shortcuts, Action Button and Control Center

Qapture's actions (Save the Last…, Start Recording, Stop Recording, Add Marker, Save Last 30s) run on your iPhone. If you use Siri, your voice request is handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy; Qapture receives only the action to perform.

Third-party services

None. Qapture contains no third-party code, and no analytics, advertising, crash-reporting, cloud-storage or social-media services.

Network access

Qapture does not use the internet and works entirely offline. Sharing a recording uses iOS's own sharing, described above.

Contacting us

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include, and use them only to reply to you.

Children's privacy

Qapture does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13.
